Special Features:Believed to be the most intact Mississippian Culture site in thesoutheastern United States, the site contains six earthen mounds, aplaza, village area, borrow pits, and a defensive ditch. The area waslikely a major political and religious center and home to severalthousand Native Americans between A.D. 1000 and 1550. To date onlyabout ten percent of the site has been excavated. The park's museuminterprets daily life in the community with exhibits of stone effigies,wooden figures, objects made of sea shell and stone, and other artifacts.
