Calk

Much like a cleat on a shoe, except that calks were for horseshoes. Calks were used to increase traction when there was snow or ice on the ground. In one design, the calks were an integral part of the shoe. In another design, each individual calk was driven into a mating hole in the shoe. In yet another, each calk had threads and was screwed into a threaded hole in the shoe.
