Epifanii Slavinetskii

 

Year of birth unknown; died Nov. 19, 1675, in Moscow. Russian and Ukrainian writer and scholar.

Epifanii Slavinetskii arrived in Moscow in 1649 from the Ukraine, where he had attended the Kiev Brotherhood School. He assisted Patriarch Nikon in the revision of the church books. He wrote over 50 sermons. He held a Greek orientation and was an encyclopedic scholar and humanist. Approximately 40 of his syllabic literary songs, epic in character, have survived. His hymnological sacred songs were recopied in 17th- and 18th-century manuscript songbooks.
