(dou`ē), 1847–1907, founder of the Christian Catholic ChurchChristian Catholic Church,religious denomination founded (1896) in Chicago by John Alexander Dowie. Its members are sometimes known as Zionites. The church has its center in Zion, Ill., which Dowie founded (1901) as a religious community.

Dowie's teaching included belief in the healing of disease by prayer, and he founded the International Divine Healing Association. Dowie went to the United States in 1888; he founded his church in Chicago in 1896. In 1901, Dowie established Zion, Ill., which was composed of his followers and governed by special regulations laid down by him. Soon his administration was under criticism, and in 1905 he was deposed.
