Established: 1937.
Location:Northeast of Roswell, New Mexico, in the middle of the Pecos River Valley.
Facilities:Viewing sites, picnic area, trails, auto tour route, endangered species tours (by appointment).
Activities:Hiking, horseback riding, hunting, bicycling, educational programs.
Special Features:Site of the endangered interior least terns' only nesting area in New Mexico. The refuge supports one of the most diverse populations of dragonflies and damselflies in North America.
Habitats: 24,536 acres where the Chihuahuan Desert, short grass prairie, Pecos River and the Rosewell artesian come together.
Access: Open daily from dawn to dusk.
Wild life: Sandhill cranes and migratory waterfowl, dragonflies, damselflies, frogs, horned lizard, deer.
