Fanning friction factor[′fan·iŋ ′frik·shən ‚fak·tər] (fluid mechanics) A dimensionless number used in studying fluid friction in pipes, equal to the pipe diameter times the drop in pressure in the fluid due to friction as it passes through the pipe, divided by the product of the pipe length and the kinetic energy of the fluid per unit volume.
