Etilovaia Zhidkost

Etilovaia zhidkost’ is a mixture of tetraethyllead or tetra-methyllead (50–62 percent by mass) with ethyl bromide, dibromoethane, and other compounds that remove lead from a motor in the form of volatile, halogen-containing compounds. The mixture reduces the knocking tendency of the gasolines used in airplanes and motor vehicles. Thus, when 1 kg of gasoline is treated with 0.5–4 milliliters of the mixture, its octane number will increase by 4–15.

Etilovaia zhidkost’ is highly toxic, and poisoning is possible by breathing air contaminated with the vapors from the liquid or by letting it come into contact with the skin. For this reason, the use of etilovaia zhidkost’ is decreasing.
