California fog

California fog

[¦kal·ə¦fȯr·nyə ′fäg] (meteorology) Fog peculiar to the coast of California and its coastal valleys; off the coast, winds displace warm surface water, causing colder water to rise from beneath, resulting in the formation of fog; in the coastal valleys, fog is formed when moist air blown inland during the afternoon is cooled by radiation during the night.
