Corey, Lewis (b. Luigi Carlo Fraina)

(1892–1953) Marxist theorist, economist; born in Galdo, Italy. He emigrated to New York City with his family (1894). Largely self-educated, he was a reporter for the New York Journal and the socialist Daily People. He founded and led the Bolshevik Bureau of Information (1917) and was international secretary for the Communist Party of America (1919). In Russia (1920–22), he became disillusioned with Communist politics and turned to economics. He wrote The Decline of American Capitalism (1934) and helped to found the Union of Democratic Action (1940), which later became Americans for Democratic Action. Without a high school education, he became professor of economics at Antioch College (1942–51). He wrote Meat and Man (1950) and was about to be deported as a Communist by the FBI at the time of his death.
