Field MarshalField Marshal(Russian, general-fel’dmarshal), the highest military rank in the ground forces. It was introduced for the first time in Germany in the 16th century. In Russia it was introduced in 1699. It corresponds to the rank of marshal in France and some other countries. In Russia there were 64 field marshals altogether, among them B. P. Sheremetev, P. S. Saltykov, P. A. Rumiantsev, M. I. Kutuzov, and D. A. Miliutin. field marshal
