Flame-Throwing Tank

Flame-Throwing Tank

a tank equipped with a flamethrower and designed to destroy enemy manpower and combat equipment.

There are various types of flame-throwing tanks. In some the flamethrowers are an auxiliary weapon to supplement cannon and machine guns, whereas in others the heavy flame-throwing device is the primary weapon. The fuel tube of the flamethrower is mounted in the turret instead of a gun, and a container holding the incendiary mixture is placed inside the tank; the tank also has a high-caliber machine gun. The M67 flame-throwing tank, with which American troops are equipped, has a supply of about 1,400 liters of incendiary mixture and a flame-throwing range of up to 230 m; it can operate continuously for one minute. Flame throwing is usually done in separate bursts lasting ten to 20 seconds.
