Corethra

(also Chaoborus), a genus of insects of the family Culicidae. According to some taxonomists these insects and other closely related genera form the special family Chaoboridae. They are mosquitoes of medium size (6–10 mm long), with long legs and a short proboscis. The larvae are semitransparent and have a spindle-shaped body; they are active predators, feeding on small crustaceans (Daphnia and Cyclops) and the young larvae of other mosquitoes. The larvae usually dwell in deep water but seldom descend to the bottom. The larvae of various species of Corethra inhabit ponds, large deep lakes, and marshy and peat-filled bodies of water; they are also found in bodies of water that are rich in humus and silt. The adults, which are encountered along shores, are not bloodsuckers.
