Chatkal Range

a mountain range in the western Tien-Shan, in the Kirghiz and Uzbek SSR’s; borders the northwestern part of the Fergana Valley. The Chatkal Range is approximately 200 km long, with an average elevation of 3,500 m and a maximum elevation of 4,503 m. The mountains are composed of shales, limestones, and granites. The northern slopes are short and steep; on the south the mountains are more gently sloping and have thickets of English walnut, Schrenk’s spruce, fir, and juniper. Meadows are found at the higher elevations.
