Calder, A. Stirling

Calder, A. (Alexander) Stirling

(1870–1945) sculptor; born in Philadelphia (father of Alexander “Sandy” Calder). He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1886–90), in Paris (1890), and was based in Pittsfield, Mass., and New York City. He is known for public works, such as the Swann Memorial, Philadelphia (1924), and for sculptural portraits.
