An ancient fishing village, it was a favorite vacation spot of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, whose visits sparked the growth of Biarritz into one of the world's most fashionable sea resorts. The Museum of the Sea contains an aquarium and research center.Biarritz(in Basque, “two oaks” or “two rocks” ; according to other data, “a rock projection”), a city in southwestern France in the department of Basses-Pyrénées, near Bayonne on the Bay of Biscay on the Atlantic Ocean. Population 25,500 (1966). Biarritz is a climatic seaside health and balneary resort. The climate is warm and moderately humid (mean annual temperature 13.5° C; relative humidity 68–75 percent). The precipitation is highest in October (185 mm) and lowest in July (86 mm). The principal methods of treatment are aerotherapy, sea baths, sand and sun baths, and saline baths in water from the mineral springs at Briscous, located 20 km from Biarritz.
