calcium current

calcium current

A term for the flow of Ca2+ through specific channels, which is critical for the release of neurotransmitters from presynaptic vesicles. Voltage-gated calcium channels are divided according to the type of calcium current with which they are associated.
Calcium current types
L—Long-lasting activation.
N—Neural type.
P—Purkinje activation related to the release of neurotransmitters.
R—Poorly understood; found in cerebellar granule cells.
T—Transient activatation.
