flight information region (FIR)

FIR and sub FIR boundaries as shown in aeronautical charts.An airspace of defined dimensions within which flight information service and alerting service are provided (ICAO). These should be delineated to cover the whole of air route structure by such regions. It will include all airspace within its lateral limits, except as limited by an upper flight information region. In this case, the specified lower limit shall constitute the upper vertical limit of the flight information region and should coincide with a VFR (visual flight rules) cruising level.
