Denat de Gutllebon, Jeanne-Claude Denat de Gutllebon, Jeanne-Claude (1935–2009)The wife of conceptual artist Christo Jayacheff. The pair is responsible for some of the largest, most dramatic public art installations in the world, including covering Germany’s Reichstag building in fabric, “mummifying” the Pont Neuf in Paris, surrounding a string of islands off the coast of Honda in pink nylon, and erecting 7,500 fabric gates in New York’s Central Park (illus.). Their temporary installations often relied on millions of yards of fabric and a permitting process that could take years, if it happened at all. Together they completed 19 projects; 37 had to be abandoned because permission was refused. The larger the project, the more publicity it generated. Six of their projects were the subject of documentary films by Albert Maysles, including “Christo’s Valley Curtain” in 1974, which was nominated for an Oscar. (See also Christo.) |
