Beliaev, Vladimir Pavlovich

Born Mar. 21 (Apr. 3), 1909, in Kamenets-Podol’skii. Soviet Russian writer. CPSU member since 1931.

Beliaev wrote the novella Adolescents (1936), the books Ukrainian Nights (1939), Taras’ Voice (1939; screenplay of the same name, 1941), Leningrad Nights (1942), The Gulf in Fog (1943), The Border in Flames (1948), The Land’s Support (1954), Exposé (1960), On the Roads of War (1956), Who Betrayed You? (1969), and others, as well as the screenplay Ivanna (1959), sketches, short stories, and political lampoons exposing the Ukrainian nationalists and the Uniate Church. Beliaev’s main work is the trilogy Old Fortress (parts 1–3, 1937–51; State Prize of the USSR, 1952; the film Troubled Youth [1955] was based on its themes), which deals with the fascinating adventures of certain adolescents during the Civil War period and the activity of the first Komsomol members. Beliaev has received three orders, various medals, and an order from the Polish People’s Republic.
