aeroneurosis
aeroneurosis (ˌɛərəʊnjʊˈrəʊsɪs) n (Medicine) a functional disorder of aeroplane pilots characterized by anxiety and various psychosomatic disturbances, caused by insufficient oxygen at high altitudes and the emotional tension of flyingaeroneurosisa stress condition of aviators, manifested in such physical symptoms as stomach pains, digestive problems, etc.See also: Disease and Illnessaeroneurosis
aeroneurosis (1) Aviator's neurasthenia, aviator's stomach, flying sickness, flying stress, flying staleness. A condition described in 1936 as apprehensiveness, increased alertness, anxiety, restlessness, stomach pains and digestive problems in pilots with 1- to 18-years of experience, attributed to prolonged flying in low oxygen environments and the tension of flying. It is of limited validity, as the factors causing it may have been eliminated by pressuring the cabins. (2) Possibly, “performance anxiety” in pilots. (3) Airsickness, see there.
