Association of Social Science Scientific-Research Institutes

(full name: Russian Association of Social Science Scientific-Research Institutes; RANION), a complex of social science scientific research institutes of the RSFSR formed in Moscow by a decision of the Academic Council of the People’s Commissariat of Education (May 15, 1924). By 1930, RANION had brought together the following institutes: the institutes of economics, history, Marxism, scientific philosophy, Soviet law, agricultural economics, land management and migration, experimental psychology, linguistics and the history of literature, archaeology and art criticism, ethnic and national cultures of the Eastern peoples, and comparative history of the literature and languages of the West and East, the Academy of Fine Arts, and the Academy of the History of Material Culture. Among RANION’s tasks were the organization of scientific research in the social sciences, the study of special problems in this area raised by the needs of the state, the preparation of scientific cadres, and the popularization of scientific knowledge in the social sciences. RANION was liquidated in 1930 in connection with the reorganization of the system of scientific institutions.
