Babcock, George

Babcock, George (Herman)

(1832–93) engineer, inventor; born near Otsego, N.Y. At age 12 he moved to Westerly, R.I., where he became friends with his future partner, Stephen Wilcox. With his father, Babcock invented the first polychromatic printing press. He and Wilcox later produced an improved type of steam engine. At the same time, the partners designed and produced a water tube boiler that could withstand far greater pressures than earlier types, making possible the development of more powerful steam engines.
