Álvarez del Vayo, Julio

 

Born Nov. 9, 1891, in Madrid. Spanish political leader, publicist, and diplomat. In 1931 he was elected to the Cortes as a representative of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party. In 1931–33, he was ambassador to Mexico. In 1934, he became a leader of the left wing of the socialists. During the Spanish Civil War of 1936–39, he was minister of foreign affairs from September 1936 to May 1937 and from April 1938 to April 1939 and general commissar of the army from October 1936 to November 1937. He has lived in exile since 1939.
