Zvenigorod Galitskii

 

the name of two cities in Western Rus’.

(1) Zvenigorod Galitskii (Chervenskii) on the Belka River (L’vov Oblast, Ukrainian SSR). At the end of the llth century it was the center of the appanage principality of the Galician lands; in mid-12th century it was included in the Terebovol’sk Principality; in the first half of the 13th century it was incorporated into the Galitsko-Volynian Principality. It fell into decline in the middle of the 13th century and became a village in the 15th. At present it is the village of Zvenigorod in Pustomyty Raion.

(2) Zvenigorod Galitskii on the left bank of the Dnestr, between the estuaries of the Seret and Zbruch rivers (Ternopol’ Oblast, Ukrainian SSR). In the 12th century it was the center of a small appanage principality but was destroyed by the Mongol Tatars in the middle of the 13th century.
