Zondek, Bernhard

Born July 29, 1891, in Wronke (now Wronki), Poland; died Nov. 8, 1966, in New York. Gynecologist and endocrinologist.

Zondek studied medicine at the University of Berlin from 1911 to 1919. From 1920 to 1923 he was an assistant at an obstetrics and gynecology clinic, becoming an extraordinary professor there in 1926. He was director of the department of obstetrics and gynecology in a hospital in Spandau (Berlin) from 1929 to 1933. Zondek left Germany after the Nazis came to power; in 1933 and 1934 he worked at the Institute of Biochemistry in Stockholm. In 1933 he was made a professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the department of medicine at Hebrew University in Jerusalem; he also directed the university’s hormonal research laboratory.

Zondek’s primary work was on the problems of internal secretions and the role of sex hormones in the physiological and pathological processes of the female body. In 1927, Zondek and S. Aschheim developed a biological test for early detection of pregnancy.
