Zombie Priest The Goon #14 2005 © & ™ Eric Powell. COVER ART BY ERIC POWEL Zombie Priest (pop culture)When a comic book's heroes are underworld gangsters, its villains are bound to be extraordinarily evil. In The Goon, this sort of superlative villainy is precisely what the Zombie Priest provides. The Goon, created by writer/artist Eric Powell and published by Dark Horse Comics, is an amalgam of various periods and genres of comics. The book is part humor, part mystery, part action, and part horror. One of the series' staple gags occurs when Goon's partner, a character named Frankie, yells “Knife to the eye!”—a direct reference to the war on comics' content that Dr. Fredric Wertham launched with his 1954 book Seduction of the Innocent. The Goon is apparently set in the 1930s, but contemporary technology and popular culture references pervade the series. The book offers a unique mixture of familiar comics elements, and its feature villain reflects the complexity of the book as a whole. The Zombie Priest (also known as “the Nameless One”) is loosely patterned on a traveling southern preacher, but he is also a mad scientist, a witch doctor, and a voodoo priest who dabbles in monstrous reanimation of dead creatures. The Priest's past is murky, but bits and pieces of his history have been revealed over the course of the series. A short story in The Goon #14 (2005) revealed that the Priest is an ancient manifestation of evil whose destiny is tied to his archetypal nemesis, the Goon. Before the Zombie Priest settled in Goon's city, he traveled from town to town corrupting local populations. In one of these towns, the Priest subverted the authority of the sheriff and gradually killed off the town's populace only to revive them later as zombies. The sheriff (now known as Buzzard) survived the attack, but the Priest cursed him with a cruel, horrible fate. As of early 2006 the Zombie Priest has set up his headquarters on Lonely Street in Goon's hometown. Despite Goon's repeated attempts to defend his own turf against rival gang leaders, the Priest appears to be cultivating an army of the undead to wage a final war against humanity. |
