This is stimulated by one or more tumours of the pancreas, known as gastrinomas, that secrete a powerful hormone acting on the stomach. Gastrinomas are often malignant, although slow-growing. Complete surgical removal is not always possible and drugs in the H-2 receptor antagonist group, such as cimetidine, or the more recent proton pump blocking drugs, such as OMEPRAZOLE, are often used. Removal of the stomach (gastrectomy) may be necessary.
