Zlatoust Metallurgical Works
Zlatoust Metallurgical Works
a Soviet ferrous-metallurgy industrial enterprise, located in the city of Zlatoust, Cheliabinsk Oblast, RSFSR. The plant manufactures alloy steels and special alloys for enterprises in various sectors of industry in the USSR and a number of foreign countries.
The plant was established in 1900, and a 50-ton (daily capacity) charcoal-fired blast furnace was put into service in 1902. One more blast furnace and three open-hearth furnaces were constructed prior to 1917. The plant was fundamentally reconstructed during the years of Soviet power. Blast-furnace operations were discontinued, and the open-hearth, electric steel-smelting, and rolling mill operations were expanded. Forged, gauged metal and silver steel production was begun on equipment evacuated from the Elektrostal’ plant during the Great Patriotic War (1941–45). New manufacturing processes were adopted between 1960 and 1970. The plant’s steel and rolled-steel production in 1970 was several times greater than that of 1917. The Zlatoust plant was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1966.
