Zinke (also zink, cornett), an ancient mouthpiece wind instrument. The zinke was a straight or curved tube made of wood or ivory, with seven finger holes (six holes at the front and one hole at the rear of the tube) to vary the pitch. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was used in secular and sacred chamber music. Until the 19th century the zinke was used by the Stadtpfeifer (town musicians, or waits) as a signaling instrument. |
