Zimbabwe Defense Forces Day

Zimbabwe Defense Forces Day

August 15To honor the nation's armed forces, Zimbabwe holds a special celebration annually on August 15. Despite the economic problems that plague the African country, including inflation over 400 percent and unemployment of 70 percent, the nation spends enormous amounts of its wealth on military equipment and training for its defense forces. President Robert Mugabe has explained that opposition to Zinbabwe's controversial land reform program, which involves confiscating farm land owned by whites to give to black military veterans, has pushed him to ensure that the country can defend itself from aggressive foreign powers.
To celebrate Zimbabwe Defense Forces Day in 2006, President Robert Mugabe inspected parading troops in a soccer stadium in the capital city. Wearing a green and gold sash and displaying his medals, Mugabe rode through the stadium in an open military vehicle.
