Zhuravchenko, Aleksandr Nikolaevich

Born May 29 (June 10), 1884, in Kiev; died Aug. 21, 1964, in Moscow. Soviet scientist in aircraft construction. Doctor of technical sciences (1934), professor (1925), and Honored Worker in Science and Technology of the RSFSR (1940). Became a member of the CPSU in 1947.

During World War I (1914–18), Zhuravchenko conducted scientific work on the theory of bombing and made sighting devices. In 1918 he graduated from the Petrograd Artillery Academy. From 1919 to 1964 he worked at the Central Aerodynamic and Hydrodynamic Institute and taught at a number of institutions of higher learning. He published works on the theory of dynamic stability and spin in aircraft. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1943 and 1950 and was awarded an Order of Lenin and two other orders, as well as medals.
