Zhizdra


Zhizdra

 

a river in Kaluga Oblast, RSFSR. Left tributary of the Oka. Length, 223 km; basin area, 9,170 sq km. It flows within the Central Russian Upland. The Zhizdra is fed by both snow and rain. The average flow of water is approximately 35 cu m per sec, at the city of Kozel’sk. It freezes at the end of November and opens up at the beginning of April. The Zhizdra’s tributaries include the Resseta and the Vytebet’ from the right and the Serena from the left. The river is used for floating logs. The cities of Zhizdra and Kozel’sk are located on the river.


Zhizdra

 

a city and the center of Zhizdra Raion, Kaluga Oblast, RSFSR. It is situated on the Zhizdra River (a tributary of the Oka), 12 km northwest of the Zikeevo railroad station (on the Moscow-Briansk line). The city has a dairy, a branch of the Moscow Leather Goods Factory, and enterprises producing barrels and furniture. Zhizdra became a city in 1777.
