Zhigulevsk
Zhigulevsk
a city in Kuibyshev Oblast, RSFSR. It is located on the right bank of the Volga, in the northern part of the Samarskaia Luka, a great bend of the Volga. Zhigulevsk has a railroad station 75 km northeast of the city of Syzran’. Population, 53,000 (1971). The city grew on the site of the villages of Otvazhnoe and Morkvashi after nearby oil deposits were opened up and the V. I. Lenin Volga Hydroelectric Power Plant was constructed. It was changed from settlement status to that of a city in 1952. The city’s industries include a combine producing construction materials and fac-tories for wood products, prefabricated reinforced concrete, lime, and art products, as well as food industry enterprises. There is a medical school in the city.
