Zhemtala Treasure

 

a group of bronze objects from the eighth century B.C. Discovered in 1947 in a grotto in the gorge of the Psygansu River, near the village of Zhemtala, Kabarda-Balkar ASSR, it consists of a vase (45 cm high) with two zoomorphic handles, six tankards with similar handles, six axes, two chains, and fragments of dagger sheaths. These artifacts bear witness to the high degree of skill in the working of nonferrous metals that existed among the tribes of the Koban culture of the Caucasus during the first millennium B.C. The objects are housed in the State Historical Museum in Moscow.
