Zheltye Vody

(until 1957, the settlement of Zheltaia Reka), a city in Dnepropetrovsk Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. It has a railroad station (Zheltaia Reka). Population, 40,000 (1970). The settlement was established at the end of the 19th century, when iron ore began to be mined in the area. The city has food-processing enterprises, including a meat combine and a dairy, a clothing factory, and a pedagogical school.

On May 5–6, 1648, a battle was fought near Zheltye Vody between rebel Ukrainian cossacks led by B. Khmernitskii and the advance guard of the Polish troops commanded by S. Potocki and T. Szemberg. After 5,000 registered cossacks had crossed the Dnieper to aid the rebels, Khmer nitskii surrounded the Polish camp at Zheltye Vody on May 5. The Polish troops tried to break out of the encirclement but were routed near Kniazh’i Bairaki on May 6. The rebels’ first vic-tory inspired the Ukrainian people to struggle against the Polish feudal lords.
