Zhamso Tumunov

Tumunov, Zhamso Tumunovich

Born Feb. 5, 1916, in the village of Taptanai, in what is now Aga-Buriat National Okrug, Chita Oblast; died Jan. 12,1955, in Ulan-Ude. Soviet Buriat writer. Member of the CPSU from 1939.

Tumunov fought in the Great Patriotic War of 1941—45 and graduated from the Higher Party School Under the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1951. Tumunov began publishing in 1938. Although he wrote several collections of short stories and poems, his most important works were the novels The Steppe Has Awakened (1949; Russian translation, 1965) and Golden Rain (published 1956; Russian translation, 1958). The former deals with the Civil War in Transbaikalia, and the latter depicts the military exploits and heroic labor of the people during the Great Patriotic War.
