Zemlia i Volia
(Land and Liberty), the press organ of the secret Narodnik (Populist) society Land and Liberty in Russia. The subtitle of the periodical was Sotsial’norevoliutsionnoe oboirenie (Social-Revolutionary Review). The first issue was dated Oct. 25-Nov. 1,1878. The last issue, No. 5, came out on Apr. 16, 1879. It was printed in an under-ground free printing shop in St. Petersburg and had a circulation of several thousand. S. M. Kravchinskii, D. A. Klements, N. A. Morozov, G. V. Plekhanov, and L. A. Tikhomirov were on the editorial board. It carried policy articles, political and satirical features, and correspondence on revolutionary events, and it divulged secret government documents. The text ofZemlia i volia was reprinted by V. la. Bogucharskii in his book Revolutionary Journalism of the 1870’s, published in 1905 in Paris and in 1906 in Russia.
