The city is on a major north-south railroad and highway and has an airport. First known as Zazzau, it was founded about A.D. 1000 and was one of the seven HausaHausaor Haussa , black African ethnic group, numbering about 23 million, chiefly in N Nigeria and S Niger. Zaria is the seat of Ahmadu Bello Univ. (1962) and an agricultural school. The old part of the city is surrounded by walls. Zariaa city in northern Nigeria, in the North-Central State. It is a railroad and highway junction. Population, 197,500 (1970). The city is an important trade center for a cotton-growing region. It has cotton-cleaning, textile, and tobacco enterprises and vegetable oil and flour mills, as well as railroad shops and bicycle assembly plants. Trades in Zaria include weaving and tanning of hides. A university is located in the city. In the past Zaria was one of the cities of the Hausa states. Zaria(Dawn), a Marxist scholarly and political journal published in Stuttgart in 1901 and 1902 by the editorial board of the newspaper Iskra. Four numbers, or three volumes, of Zaria were published: Number 1 in April 1901 (March 23, New Style), Numbers 2 and 3 in December 1901, and Number 4 in August 1902. The tasks of Zaria were defined in the “Draft of a Declaration of the Editorial Board of Iskra and Zaria,” written by V. I. Lenin (Poln. sobr. soch., 5th ed., vol. 4, pp. 322-33). Zaria propagandized the ideas of revolutionary Marxism and published criticisms of Narodnichestvo (Populism), legal Marxism, Bernsteinism, and other currents of international opportunism. Among the works published in Zaria were Lenin’s “The Persecutors of the Zemstvo and the Hannibals of Liberalism,” “The Agrarian Program of Russian Social-Democracy,” “The ‘Critics’ on the Agrarian Question,” “Review of Home Affairs,” and “Casual Notes” and G. V. Plekhanov’s “Critique of Our Critics: Mr. P. The expedition worked in the area of the Novosibirskie Islands. On Sept. 8, 1902, after two winter stops near Taimyr Island and on Kotel’nyi Island, the Zaria arrived in Tiksi Bay, where it ran aground and was abandoned by the members of the expedition. (2) A motor and sail schooner built in Finland in 1953 for the systematic study of the earth’s magnetic field. It has a wooden hull, and the metallic parts are made of nonmagnetic materials. The Zaria is 52 m long, 9 m wide, and has a dis-placement of 605 tons. From 1953 on, Soviet scientists have been conducting investigations in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans on the Zaria.
