Zapiski Vsesoiuznogo Mineralogicheskogo Obshchestva
(Notes of the All-Union Mineralogical Society), a leading scientific journal in the field of mineralogy, crystallography, petrography, and the study of useful minerals.
Periodical publications of the Mineralogical Society began to be published in St. Petersburg in 1830 under the title Trudy Mineralogicheskogo obshchestva (Works of the Mineralogical Society; parts 1–2, 1830–42) and under the title Schriften der St.-Petersburg gestifteten Russisch-Kaiserlichen Gesellschaft fur die gesamte Mineralogie (1842). From 1842 to 1858 the journal was known as Verhandlungen der Russisch-Kaiserlichen Mineralogischen Gesellschaft zu St.-Petersburs and from 1858 to 1862 as Verhandlungen der Kaiserlichen Gesellschaft fur die gesammte Mineralogie zu St.-Petersburg. Between 1830 and 1863, 16 volumes were published, constituting the first series of periodical publications of the Mineralogical Society. From 1866 through 1915 it was published under the title Zapiski imp. Sankt-Peter-burgskogo mineralogicheskogo obshchestva (vtoraia seriia) (Notes of the Imperial Saint Petersburg Mineralogical Society [second series]). From 1915 through 1922 only one edition of the journal was published (in 1918), under the title Zapiski Mineralogicheskogo obshchestva. From 1923 through 1932 it was known as Zapiski Rossiiskogo mineralogicheskogo obshchestva, from 1933 through 1947 as Zapiski Vserossiiskogo mineralogicheskogo obshchestva, and since 1948 as Zapiski Vsesoiuznogo mineralogicheskogo obshchestva.
Until the creation of the Geological Committee (1882), which began publishing Trudy in 1883 and Izvestiia in 1882, the journal was the central geologic organ in Russia. Works on paleontology were published in Zapiski until the formation of the Paleontological Society. Articles on geology are still being published in it.Zapiski Vsesoiuznogo mineralogicheskogo obshchestva has played an important role in the history of development of Russian and Soviet mineralogy and geology. The research of N. I. Koksharov, P. V. Eremeev, A. V. Gadolin, E. S. Fedorov, A. P. Karpinskii, A. E. Fersman, A. N. Zavaritskii, and S. S. Smirnov, among others, was published in the journal. It is published six times a year and has a circulation of 1,400 (1971).
