Zapev

(lead-in). (1) The beginning of a choral song, performed by one or several singers(zapevaly). It can be short or it can comprise an entire verse, the concluding phrase of which (the refrain) is repeated by the chorus. In folk songs, if the verse is repeated, the lead-in is usually varied. (2) In a by Una (folk epic) an introduction that prepares the listener for the basic content of the work. An example is the zapev to the bylina Solovei Budimirovich, which N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov used in the opera Sadko (the chorus “Vysota /’, vysota podnebesnaia”). The majority of by liny do not have azapev.
