a city and center of Zakataly Raion, Azerbaijan SSR, on the Talachai River (a tributary of the Alazan’), in the forested foothills of the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus. It is located on the Evlakh-Sheki-Tbilisi highway, 152 km northwest of the Evlakh railroad junction. Population, 13,000 (1970). Zakataly is the site of plants for preparing nuts and preserving fruits. There is a butter and cheese creamery and a poultry hatchery. There is also a silkworm farm, an essential oils plant, factories producing furniture and tea, and a brickworks. Asphalt is also produced. Zakataly has an agricultural technicum, a pedagogical school, a historical museum of local lore, and a people’s theater. The city is also a tourist center. Zakataly, founded in 1830 as the fortress of Novye Zakataly, has been a city since 1840 (according to other data, since 1851).
