Yungting Ho
Yungting Ho
a river in East China; a right tributary of the Pai Ho of the Hai Ho basin. The length of the Yungting, as measured from the source of its headstream the Sangkan Ho, is about 700 km; the river drains an area of 48,500 sq km.
The Yungting flows mainly through the northeastern part of the Shansi Plateau. Its lower course lies in the North China Plain; here the river, which was subject to changes of channel in the past, has been embanked to protect against floods. The mean flow rate is about 45 cu m per sec; freshets occur in the summer. In the Kuant’ingchan Gorge, before the river emerges onto the plain, there is a hydroengineering complex consisting of a dam, a reservoir with an area of about 220 sq km, and a hydroelectric power plant. The complex supplies water and power to Peking. The Yungting is also used for irrigation. It is navigable on the plain during high water.
