Yugoslav Drama Theater

(Jugoslovensko Dramsko Pozorište), established in Belgrade in 1948. The famous stage director B. Stupica was the theater’s artistic director from 1948 to 1970, except for a few brief intervals. During the 1950’s and 1960’s the distinguished directors T. Tanhofer, M. Milošević, and M. Belović also worked here.

The theater stages national and foreign classics, as well as contemporary Yugoslav and Soviet plays. Besides experimenting with theatrical forms, the theater gives special attention to the social message of its productions. Since the 1950’s memorable performances have been given by M. Ajvaz, M. Crnobori, M. Živanović, L. Jovanović, J. Rutić, L. Tadić, S. Simić, B. Katalinić, R. Djuričin, and M. Janketić. The excellence of its productions owes much to the directing skill of M. Belovic, B. Pleša, S. Žigon, and D. Mijać.

Outstanding productions have included Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya (1948), Držić’s Dundo Maroje (1949), Gorky’s Egor Bulychov and the Others (1951), Goethe’s Iphigenia in Tauride (1960), Krleža’s At the Edge of Reason (1963), Matković’s The General and his Fool (1970), Nušić’s Mister Dollar (1975), and Gorky’s Enemies (1976). Since 1969 the Bojan Stupica Small Stage has been giving performances by young people. The theater toured the USSR in 1956 and 1965.
