In central AZ, north of Phoenix; original county; organized Dec 21, 1860 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For a tribe of Yuman linguistic stock who lived in western AZ. Name has been variously explained. Most probable is 'sun people,' from enyaeva 'sun'; pai 'people'. Other theories include 'hill country' from yava 'hill'; Spanish pais 'country'; and 'crooked-mouth (surly) people.'
