Yata, All

Born Aug. 25, 1920, in Tangier. Figure in the national liberation, working-class, and communist movements of Morocco.

Yata graduated from the University of Algiers with a degree in philology. A teacher of Arabic and a journalist, he helped found the Moroccan Communist Party (MCP) in 1943, the Party of Liberation and Socialism (PLS) in 1968, and the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) in 1974. Yata became secretary of the Central Committee of the MCP in 1945 and was elected a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee in 1946. He was first secretary of the Central Committee from 1946 to 1966 and general secretary from 1966 to 1968.

The director of the newspaper Al-muqafih from 1960 to 1964 and the newspaper Al-qifah al-watani from 1965 to 1969, Yata became the director of the newspaper Albayan at the end of 1972. He was secretary-general of the PLS from 1968 to 1974; in August 1974 he was elected secretary-general of the PPS. He was subjected to repressive measures on several occasions.

Yata is the author of works on issues of the national liberation movement.
