Yaranga

Yaranga

a Chukchi term for a portable dwelling used by nomadic Chukchi, Koriaks, and some groups of Evens and Yukaghirs. Circular in plan, the yaranga consists of a wooden frame with a conical dome formed by poles. The structure is covered with reindeer skins. A cubical curtain made of reindeer skins divides the yaranga. Inside the curtain is living space, which is illuminated and heated by an oil lamp; outside the curtain is a storage area. The yaranga is still used by groups of reindeer herders.
