Yahata
(also Yawata), a city in Japan, on the northern coast of Kyushu Island; since 1963 a ward in the city of Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture. Population, 347,000 (1970). Industry in the shore area includes port facilities, the Yahata Iron and Steel Works, and plants for the manufacture of coke by-products, cement, silica brick, and electric motors.
