XTE
XTE Abbrev. for X-ray Timing Explorer, a NASA satellite launched in December 1995 and designed to study variability and broad-band spectra of the brighter cosmic X-ray sources. The main payload consists of a large (6250 cm2) array of proportional counters, sensitive over the 2–60 keV band. Other instruments extend coverage to 200 keV and provide an all-sky search for transient X-ray sources. All spacecraft systems remain operational up to the end of 2005 and the mission has yielded unique data on both short-term (e.g. kHz QPOs) and long-term variability of many X-ray binary sources and AGN.XTE
