Baldin, Aleksandr Mikhailovich

Born Feb. 26, 1926, in Moscow. Soviet physicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1972).

Baldin graduated in 1949 from the Moscow Physical Engineering Institute, where he became a professor in 1965. From 1949 to 1968 he was on the staff of the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1968 he was appointed director of the High-energy Laboratory of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna.

Baldin’s main works deal with electromagnetic interactions of elementary particles and atomic nuclei and with the physical principles of particle acceleration. Under Baldin’s direction, the proton synchrotron at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research was converted into the first accelerator of relativistic nuclei.

Baldin received the State Prize of the USSR in 1973. He has been awarded two orders and various medals.
