Wu P’ei-fu

Born 1878; died 1939. Chinese military and political figure. A leader of the Chihli militarist clique, which controlled the Peking government from 1920 to 1924.

Wu P’ei-fu was supported by English and American imperialists, who cast him in the role of a “unifier” of China. With much bloodshed, he put down the Peking-Hank’ou strike of 1923. During the Northern Campaign of 1926–27, troops under his command were routed by the National Revolutionary Army; after this defeat, Wu withdrew from the political arena.
